XIXA - Summer Wine

posted at 10/07/2019

A tribute to Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood's ethereal classic showcases XIXA’s passion for dreamy Americana alongside their very own melodic symbiosis of Latin, Psychrock and Goth. The single features one of the most exciting female voices in Indie & Alt-Country, Los Angeles’ Pearl Charles. The song hits all digital outlets Oct 4th, as XIXA kicks off another tour around Europe in support of their latest acclaimed EP, The Code.

In The Code, Tucson’s dark, dusty, gothic overlords, XIXA, dug deeper into their desert roots to carve a more grandiose space for their catchy and latin-tinged psychedelic rock. Now they’re preparing for a new chapter: the release of their upcoming full-length album, Genesis (out in early 2020).

The single Summer Wine showcases XIXA’s innate understanding of American songwriting. While it started off as an occasional encore in the band’s setlist, an encounter with the singer Pearl Charles inspired XIXA to record its own version of this all-time classic.

"Summer Wine is one of those tunes that I've always wished I'd written. It has the distinct vastness and gaze that is so unique to the southwest and more specifically the Sonoran Desert," says Brian Lopez, who co-leads the band with vocals and guitars alongside Gabriel Sullivan, who also recorded and mixed this song, as he does all XIXA tracks. Sullivan adds: "We stayed fairly true to the original but certainly brought in aspects that I feel are a unique blend. Replacing the elegant horn and string parts with 80's synthesizers and Mellotron, then introducing Efren's cascara percussion pattern against Winston's solid as ever towel muted drums.”

With XIXA's members now scattered between LA and Tucson, it seems inevitable that they'd cross paths with Pearl Charles. Sullivan concludes: "Pearl lending her perfectly delicate and soaring vocals that juxtapose against mine and Brian's borderline whispered vocal approaches, Connor weaving in layers of pedal steel. When we first met, we immediately thought her own somewhat uncomfortable interpretation of classic American folk, alt-country etc. fit perfectly with our open musical approach. I dare say we have made our own acid blend of Summer Wine."

XIXA, the guitar-slinging six-piece from the deep Southwest combine gritty guitars, the bumping grind of chicha and cumbia, and windswept desert blues into a mesmerizing elixir. After the acclaimed 2016 debut Bloodline, their EP Shift and Shadow, and 2018’s dark western single Tombstone Rashomon, The Code was a natural next step in their evolution. A swirling, raw collection of songs, intense and sun bleached yet tinged with an inky gothic horror. The songs play like the long-lost soundtrack to a panoramic Tarantino Western; poised, stylish, and menacing. It’s XIXA at their potent, eclectic best.

US and European tours are lined up through 2019 as XIXA continues to spread The Code far and wide. Further touring in 2020 will pave way for the release of Genesis and further cement the band’s legacy as pathfinders of a New Southwest.
